Selections: Carport and Breezeway Lighting

Enhanced exterior lighting will help make the house more attractive, functional and safe at night.  In addition to motion-sensor flood lights and landscape lights, Jane selected some decorative fixtures.   All outdoor lighting will be either automated to come when it's dark outside or motion sensor-activated.

First, the breezeway connecting the sunroom to the carport will receive two hanging chandeliers, one centered in each arch.

The carport will receive two coordinating  flush mount lights.

Selections: Powder Room Chandelier

The original plan for lighting in the new powder room was to have sconces on either side of the mirror above the sink, along with recessed lighting above.  Apparently the room is not wide enough for sconces, however, so Jane decided to add a small chandelier in the space.  She ultimately picked a chandelier that references the other original lighting throughout the house.  It is a bronze and crystal piece:

To me, this fixture directly calls to mind the chandelier in the first floor master bedroom.  I think it will be a great accent piece to the powder room.

Selections: Appliances

For the kitchen appliances, Jane chose:

1.  A 36 inch Sub-Zero refrigerator with a freezer drawer on the bottom

2.  A Wolf six burner rangetop
3.  A Wolf double oven (one of the ovens is a convection/microwave oven)

4.  A Wolf warming drawer
5.  and an Asko dishwasher

All of the appliances will be in stainless steel.

Selections: Sunroom Windows and Doors

Prior to the renovation, the sunroom's exterior walls were comprised of floor to ceiling sliding glass doors.  Although they provided great views outside, the sliding doors presented security and access issues because they could not be locked from the outside and because they could easily be jammed open by an intruder.   Over time, the glass in these doors had gotten cloudy, so a change was necessary.  Here is a photo of the sliding doors in the sunroom just prior to the start of the renovation:

In the renovation, all of the sliding doors will be removed.  In their place, casement windows will be installed along most of the exterior.  Two sets of French doors will be installed at each end of the sunroom (one pair next to the den, and one pair next to the study) for access to the garden.

Selections: Cabinet and Drawer Hardware

For the kitchen cabinets and drawers, Jane picked out the following antique pewter hardware.

I think the choice is beautiful and elegant in style and that the antique pewter finish will compliment the stainless steel appliances and faucets.  These will really enhance the the overall look of the kitchen and sunroom.

Selections: Paint

As the entire interior of the house needs to be repainted at once and very few fabrics or specific room color schemes have been finalized at this point, almost every room will be painted in the same color scheme:  neutral.  The beauty of a neutral color scheme is that anything can go with it.  The downsides are that there is no such thing as a true "neutral" scheme -- every shade of off white casts a different hue -- and that it needs to be paired with interesting furniture and fabrics to make it seem personal and inviting.

In Jane's case, the fabrics from her old house that she's carrying over to this house, and the selections to date (notably the tumbled travertine in the sun room), call for a brown/tan/cream hued neutral, rather than a gray or yellow hued neutral.  She wants to highlight the molding throughout the house with a contrasting--but not too contrasting--complimentary color.

After many rounds of color choices, her selection has been made.  The walls will be painted in Benjamin Moore's Palace White (in a flat finish) and the molding will be painted in Mayonnaise (in a semi-gloss finish).  The ceiling will also be painted Mayonnaise (in a flat finish).  Below are screenshots from Benjamin Moore's website of the two colors, which look different in person than they do on your computer screen.

Selections: Granite Slabs

The kitchen will feature dark hardwood floors and white wood cabinets.  The adjoining sunroom will feature tumbled travertine floors.  Fabrics selected for the sunroom funiture have rosey pink, cream and grayish green colors.  Jane kept this color palette in mind when choosing her granite, and did a great job in picking slabs that would compliment and enhance the overall look of the kitchen and sunroom.  The slabs chosen (which will be installed on the L shaped island and on either side of the cooktop) are interesting and subtle at the same time, and will keep the kitchen light, beautiful and unified.
